2008 GUITAR AND BASS RETREAT
Directed by Bill Burke

Enjoy a rejuvenating four days of guitar, bass and tap guitar workshops, group classes, one on one sessions, impromptu jam sessions and energizing concerts on the pristine mountain campus of Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA. Beginners warmly welcomed.

Thursday July, 31

9am-12:30pm    Arrival/Registration/Check-In

11:30am-12:30pm   Lunch/Settle-In

1:00-1:45pm     Welcoming Introduction (Burke)

                                 - Workshop overview

                                  - Resource orientation

                                       - Library of instructional books/CDs, audio CDs

                                       - Recording Room

                                 - Private Instruction Overview

                                 - Practice Space

2:00- 3:15pm     Introduction to Guitar Theory for Beginners (Burke)

                                 - Tuning Tips: Students will learn the basics of using a tuner, open                  

                                     string tuning methods and the names of open notes.

                                 -   "Knowing Your Notes is Key": Students will learn within minutes

                                     how to identify a note anywhere on the instrument.

                                 - How to Read Tablature: Students will learn how to read and

                                   communicate musical ideas through the commonly accepted form

                                   of tablature notation

                                 - Introduction to Chords: Students will learn the very basics of chord

                                    construction including two note dyads.

                                    Students will conclude by playing and notating "Wild Thing"

3:30-4:45pm             Introduction to Playing Songs (Barnett/Murphy)

                                 - Students will break into two groups (based on questionnaire                     

                                    results) and begin to learn basic song and song parts giving

                                    instructors an opportunity to evaluate partcipants' skills and

                                    needs.

5-7pm                       Dinner/Relax/Practice/Enjoy the Mountains/Get to Know

                                 Instructor meeting to discuss initial impressions and schedule

                                  private (one-on-one) lessons.

7:15-7:45pm             The Listening Room (Murphy)

                                  Dan will introduce music and musicians which display tasteful

                                  interplay within a duo/duet setting

8pm- 8:30pm           Informal Concert (Murphy/Barnett)

                                Solo and duo performances exhibiting interplay among musicians

8:45pm-?                 Jam Central - Pick up a guitar, bass, woodblock, etc and go...

 

FRIDAY AUGUST 1

7-9am                      Breakfast/Yoga/Practice

9:15-10:15am          Theory in Practice (Burke)

                                 - Review

                                - Students will learn the basics of intervals in order to:

                                   a.) form chords

                                   b.) play a typical Blues I-IV-V progression

10:30-11:45am        Technique Development (2 groups/Barnett/Murphy)

                                - Students will: practice basic chord shapes/movements and

                                                         be introduced to basic strumming, flat-picking,                

                                                         and finger-picking techniques

12-1pm                    Lunch/Practice

                                Instructors will organize the afternoon's private one-on-one lessons

                   

1-3pm                      Individual Lessons (1/2 hour each)/Practice (Barnett/Burke/Murphy)

3:15-5pm                  Recording Session I (Burke)

                                Each student is encouraged to record what hey have learned and

                                 what the would like to work on in a no-stress environment.   Playback

                                during the evening's "Listening Room" session. If a student would

                                prefer to not be recorded, she may still experience the session.

5-7pm                       Dinner/Rest/Practice/Library/Jam

7:15- 8pm                 The Listening Room (Barnett/Burke)

                                 After a brief playback of today's recording, Terry will introduce

                                 a recording(s) with analysis of "what's good" or "what to keep an

                                 ear on" while listening.

8pm-8:30pm              Informal Concert (Barnett)

8:45-?                        Jam Central - Pick up a guitar, bass, woodblock, etc and go...

 

Saturday August 2, 2008

7-9am                       Breakfast/Yoga/Practice

9:15-10:15am           Theory (Burke)

                                 - Review

                                 - Building upon our understanding of intervals students will

                                   learn basic 5 note (Pentatonic) and 7 note (Major) scales which

                                   can be used to solo over chord changes.

                                 

10:30-11:45am        Technique (3 groups/Barnett/Burke/Murphy)

                                Students can choose to develop fingerpicking/flatpicking/strumming

                                techniques or be introduced to the tapping technique.

12-1pm                    Lunch

1-4:30                     Private Instruction/Practice/Songs (Barnett/Murphy)

2-3pm                     Tools of the Trade (Burke) OPTIONAL

                               Students will learn the basics of using effects such as reverb and delay

                                and less conventional but increasingly popular devices such

                               as loopers.

5-6:30pm                Dinner/Relax/Practice

6:45-7:30pm           The Listening Room (Burke)

                                "Tap, Pluck, Pick and Strum: Contemporary Guitar Tehniques and

                                  Concepts". We'll explore styles and approaches as performed by

                                   contemporary innovators such as Don Ross, Michael Hedges,

                                  Stanley Jordan, Andy McKee and more...

8pm                          International Music Stage Concert and Event

                       After the concert: Boilerhouse Jam?? - bring you instrument and play what you hear                                        

Sunday August 3

7-9am                       Breakfast/Check-out/Practice

9-11am                     Private Lessons/Practice (Barnett/Burke/Murphy)

11am-1:30pm           Recording Session II (Burke)

                                This is the chance for each student to record and burn a CD to take

                                home.  

2-3pm                      Farewell and Listening

                               Say good-byes and hear each others performances.
