Jim studied music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Indiana University of PA, and the University of Pittsburgh. He has both a Masters degree in ethnomusicology and completed PhD coursework in cultural anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. This study involved much world travel, including several trips to India where he studied north Indian classical drumming (tabla) as a student of Ustad Zakir Hussain and Nishikant Barodekar.
Jim was the percussionist for the band Rusted Root from 1993-2001 and help define the great rhythm sound that would propel the band to gold and multi-platinum sales. Touring extensively with RR throughout the US, Canada and the UK, Jim had the opportunity to share the stage with artists such as Santana, the Dave Mathews Band, the Allman Brothers Band, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Jewel, Joan Osborne, and Sheryl Crow.
Jim is a three-time Emmy Award nominee and Telly Award recipient for his music for television, and has composed music for independent and IMAX films. He continues to compose music for film and television, teach percussion, record as a session musician, and perform regularly in a number of ensembles, including his world-beat group Big World.
